Elliot Winter is the story of a young couple, Elliot and Jane, struggling to deal with Elliot's heart condition, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Due to the severity of his condition, Elliot is unable to exert any energy in fears of sudden cardiac death and so is made to live his life trapped at home.
After working with production company A Town Called Herman as sound designer and mixer on their previous short, Pretty, I was brought onto this project to fulfill location sound recording duties as well. With the impromptu handheld recording style of DOP Stevie Cruz-martin, it was essential to capture the sound of the whole scene at all times. This was achieve by the use of carefully placed lapel mics and some very energetic booming from myself (by the end of the shoot Stevie and I had perfected our dance routine).
As sound designer and mixer on the film I aimed to support and enhance the emotion of the story and struggle of the characters. A large part of this involved the use of heartbeat SFX to put us inside Elliot's world during his heart episodes. At times the heart beat would completely overwhelm the sound track as the rest of the world faded away in his pain. Although a rather overused cliche, in the context of this film it was used (hopefully) to great effect.
